Trip Report: Split Croatia

I spent a week in Croatia (Split, Plitvice, Hvar) in July. I flew into Split and spent a day exploring the city and later to the beach.

Split was a nice town with a lovely old city, a promenade on the seafront, and many stoney beaches within walking distance. It was a holiday and not a photo holiday so the shots I got were not planned or extra effort put in to get there at the right time.

In the next two days, I rented a car and had a look at the two National Parks (Krka and Plitvice) which are 1 hour and 2 hours away from Split.

Driving and finding the parks was very easy. Both were well worth the visit, with Krka being in a smaller area but having bigger waterfalls but not as many and also being able to swim. While Plitvice Lakes National Park was spread over a full valley with loads of smaller waterfalls with both having unreal clear turquoise water and stunning waterfalls.

They both have a wooden walkway leading through the Parks which is great to view all the waterfalls and lakes. The best time for both would be early morning or late evening as it can get crowded with tourists. I stayed in an Airbnb near Zadar, as it was located between the two parks. After the national parks, I drove back to Split and took the boat to Hvar, where we stayed for another 3 days.

Hvar was great for food and nightlife and there were plenty of beaches to spend the days. There was an old fortress above the town which gave a great outlook over the surrounding area.

The port had a mixture of local fishing boats and fancy yachts. One of the days, I did a boat trip to the Blue Cave on the island Bisevo while also stopping off on the island Vis and the Paklinski Islands.

There are plenty of tour companies in the town that offer day trips; its best just to have a look around on the day before. On the last day, we got the boat back to Split and flew home. The weather was perfect with about 29 degrees Celsius and the sea was still very refreshing.

The crystal clear water was also perfect for snorkeling and we saw everything from octopus to barracuda and everything in-between.

The food was reflected in this with a lot of grilled seafood like squid or john dory. Prices were not as cheap as expected with a meal costing roughly the same as here in Ireland (10-15€).
